Part of the Classic Diesel Years series, this volume covers the West Highland Line from Glasgow to Oban, the “Gateway to the Isles” with its ferry links to many of the islands of the Inner and Outer Hebrides.
Diesel traction first appeared on the line in 1961 in the form of Class 21s. Most of the photographs in this book were taken between the late 1970s and the mid-1980s. In the first few years of this period, Class 25s, 26s and 27s dominated the scene on the route, after which Class 37s enjoyed a near monopoly for most of the 1980s.
The photographs are mostly arranged in one-per-page format, with detailed captions accompanying each image. A good mix of passenger and freight trains are featured, along with the interior of the signal box at Taynuilt and the cantilever bridge carrying the former Ballachulish branch at Connel Ferry. 48 pages.
