The Lötschberg route in Switzerland is today one of the most important rail links across the Alps. It is also the most 'French' of the Swiss lines, as it was supported by French financial institutions close to the Compagnie des Chemins de fer de l’Est, which were seeking to build a direct route to Italy.
Le chemin de fer du Lotschberg: La ligne historique et le tunnel de base gives a detailed history of the construction and operation of the route up to 2025. It describes the variety of services to have run on the system, including car and lorry transporter trains, and the Lötschberg base tunnel which opened in 2007. Towards the end there is a a substantial chapter covering the different types of rolling stock to have operated on this railway. Extracts from the 2025 timetables have also been included.
