This is a reprint of a book that was first published in 1967, and updated in 1989. In the book the author, Michael Foster, has incorporated ‘The Compleat Lartigue’ a pamphlet produced in 1886 by Behr & Petit which describes their ideas for the Lartigue Elevated Single Rail Railway.
The Listowel & Ballybunion Railway is a short history of the Listowel & Ballybunion Railway in County Kerry, Ireland, a Lartigue monorail that ran from 1888 until 1924. The first chapter gives a detailed description of the development of the Lartigue system and how it worked. Subsequent chapters cover the permanent way, the rolling stock fleet, day to day operations and a brief history of the system from opening to closure.
At the back an appendix describes a project conceived in the 1980s to rebuild the line from scratch. This eventually resulted in the Lartigue Monorail and Museum, featuring a short length of around 1000 metres of running line, opening in Listowel in the early 2003.
