Hugh Dougherty has compiled this account of his days as a conductor on Western SMT buses in Glasgow, Ayrshire and Renfrewshire (and later as a driver) as a holiday job during his time as a student at Glasgow University in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
The author describes the training process for new conductors and drivers, the workplace culture prevalent in the bus industry at the time, changes to operating practices such as introduction of decimal currency and driver-only operation, and the variety of characters encountered among the staff and passengers.
As well as photographs of buses, there are also copies of memorabilia such as tickets, timetables, fare tables and drivers’ time records. Contails approximately 30 colour and 6 black & white illustrations. 56 pages.
