Malcolm Batten has put together this fascinating collection of sightseeing bus photographs from all over Britain from the 1970s to the present day. While bus services across the country were generally in decline during this period, the sightseeing market is one area of bus operation that saw considerable growth thanks to the boom in international and domestic tourism.
London Transport’s Round London Sightseeing Tour was started in 1951 for the Festival of Britain, with open top buses first being hired in as an experiment in 1972. Starting with London, the rest of the book has the towns and cities featured arranged in alphabetical order.
Edinburgh Corporation Transport had a long tradition of sightseeing tours, with such services also having operated in locations such as Bath, Cambridge, Oxford and York. Most of the vehicles illustrated are open toppers, but some conventional enclosed double deckers and single deck coaches are also featured. Contains around 200 mostly colour photographs, all accompanied by captions. An introduction to sightseeing buses is also included. 96 pages.
